What is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

The tarsal tunnel is a narrow space that lies on the inside of the ankle next to the ankle bones. It is covered with a thick ligament, the flexor retinaculum, to protect the structures within the tunnel.

The key structure in the tunnel that is implicated in TTS is the posterior tibial nerve which becomes compressed in this condition causing pain and inflammation. This condition can be seen in people of all ages but has a higher prevalence in women.

Causes

What are the causes of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

  • Repetitive stress activities
  • Traumas such as fracture, dislocation or stretch injuries
  • Flat Feet
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Tendopathy due to overload of the tendons in the tunnel
  • Systemic diseases that cause ankle inflammation or nerve compromise
Symptoms

What are the symptoms of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

Symptoms are typically felt anywhere on the inside of the ankle and/or on the bottom of the foot.

  • Burning pain at the sole of the foot
  • Numbness or tingling at the base of the foot
Treatment

Treatment for Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

In severe, long-term cases, you may be recommended surgery or corticosteroid injections for tarsal tunnel release.

Non-surgical treatments may include:

  • Therapeutic exercises
  • Taping
Self care

What can I do at home?

  • Resting the foot and limiting physical activity
  • Icing the inflamed area
  • Wearing soft soled shoes
