What Is A Migraine?

Migraine is a chronic, episodic, primary headache that can be caused by genetic and environmental factors. It is believed to be a neurovascular pain syndrome with altered central neuronal processing and the trigeminovascular system. Symptoms typically last 4 to 72 hours at a severe intensity.

Prodrome

1-2 days before a migraine, you might notice some changes that warn of an upcoming migraine, including:

  • Hormonal changes in women
  • Postural issues – usually stemming from the neck

  • Sensory stimuli

  • Weather changes

What Are The Symptoms?

Aura (starts within an hour before the attack)

  • Visual phenomena
  • Vision loss
  • Pins and needles sensations in an arm or leg
  • Weakness or numbness in the face or one side of the body
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Pain usually on one side of your head
  • Pain that throbs or pulses

  • Nausea and vomiting
