About the condition

What is Hypermobility Syndrome?

‘Hypermobility syndrome’ is an umbrella term of connective tissue disorders that involve several conditions including but not limited to:

Thick bands of connective tissue, called ligaments, hold joints together to keep them from moving too much or out of range. In hypermobility syndrome, those ligaments are loose or weak by a suggested defect in the collagen protein. Hypermobility is a common condition, especially in children, since their connective tissues aren’t completely developed.

  • Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder
  • Ehlers–Danlos syndrome
  • Marfan syndrome
  • Osteogenesis Imperfecta
  • Stickler syndrome
Causes

What are the causes?

Unfortunately, the cause of hypermobility syndrome isn’t known, however, the condition tends to be genetic. It has been suggested that the genes implicated in the formation of collagen play a role in this condition. Collagen is a protein that adds flexibility and strength to your joints, via your ligaments and tendons.
