What is a Hip Muscle Strain?

The hip is what’s known as a ‘ball-and-socket’ joint – here, muscles serve to support, cushion and facilitate upper leg movements. Muscles of the hips can also extend to, from or over the pelvis, groin, buttocks and upper leg (thighs)

A strain is classified as an injury to the muscle or tendons (thick, fibrous, connective tissue) as either a painful stretch, to a partial tear. Once injured, recurrence is likely, especially without proper therapeutic intervention.

Causes

What are the causes of a hip muscle strain?

The exact cause and severity of muscle strains can vary, however there are some common factors which may contribute, including:

  • Hip injuries – preexisting, acute or chronic, including dislocations, ligament tears, tendon tears/injury, etc.Also: attempting to push limit/do too much – overload/overuse
