What is Fibromyalgia Syndrome?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes generalised pain and muscle stiffness in many parts of the body.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome is considered as a systemic issue involving biochemical, neuro-endocrine, and physiologic abnormalities, resulting in issues with pain processing and perception.

Fibromyalgia is common and affects around 2-5 in every 100 people, most commonly young to middle-aged women.

Causes

What are the causes of Fibromyalgia Syndrome?

The causes of Fibromyalgia Syndrome are not completely understood, but it is likely that fibromyalgia is a problem with the brain, rather than the muscles and bones.

However, there are several potential causes and risk factors that are currently associated with, or increase one’s risk for developing this condition:

  • Diet
  • Viral infections
  • Occupation, seasonal, environmental influences
  • Adverse childhood experiences (i.e. PTSD)
  • Psychological and cognitive/behavioural factors
  • Other conditions: rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or ankylosing spondylitis

What are the symptoms of Fibromyalgia Syndrome?

  • Pain in many different muscles and bones – a deep ache or burning that gets worse with activity or stress. The pain may move around the body
  • Being more sensitive to pain
  • Tenderness or stiffness in the muscles or bones, lasting for at least 3 months
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Difficulties in sleeping
  • Problems with concentration and memory
  • Anxiety, depression or emotional distress
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Restless legs
  • Headaches
  • Numbness and tingling in the arms and legs
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms
