Causes

What causes carpal tunnel syndrome?

It is not always possible to determine the exact cause of the syndrome. In some cases, it is triggered by conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, and even obesity. It also tends to occur during pregnancy.

Still, it is possible to suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome if you continue to perform certain wrist movements, especially the ones that require you to keep your hands lower than the wrists. Taking this into account, it is no wonder that we here at Vitalis Physiotherapy usually design carpal tunnel exercises for musicians, sewers or knitters, cashiers and bankers, hairstylists, and assembly workers.

How do I know if I have carpal tunnel syndrome?

Some of the earliest symptoms include finger and hand numbness and tingling, usually felt in the thumb and index, middle or ring fingers are affected, but not your little finger but not your little finger. Although in some cases this may be because of the awkward sleeping position, if the symptoms increase through the day you may experience weakness in your hand and drop objects.

Treatment

Do I need treatment?

In the earliest stages, patients claim that simply “shaking their hands and arms” helped themshake offthe unpleasant feeling. However, by postponing treatment, you will likely reach the point where it will be impossible to make the numbness go away.

More importantly – as the condition progresses, you will notice the reduced grip strength, as the muscles in the hand shrink. At some point, numbness and tingling will turn into chronic cramps and pain.

Treatment

Vitalis Physiotherapy carpal tunnel syndrome treatment

Turn to our carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms treatment specialist to discuss potential recovery plan. We at Vitalis Physiotherapy first conduct a detailed examination where we perform a specific carpal tunnel testing.

To help you heal, we apply several methods that we realised are the most effective for carpal tunnel syndrome pain treatment. We assess your biomechanics and ergonomics to reduce nerve irritation and perform manual therapy and soft tissue mobilisation, if necessary, to restore normal movement and reduce compressive forces on the joints of your wrist. Finally, we advise you on how to modify certain activities to minimise nerve pressure and give you a set of carpal tunnel syndrome exercises to perform on your own to gradually fight off the symptoms.
